  1. Premium: The amount you pay for your health insurance coverage, typically billed monthly.

  2. Deductible: The amount you must pay out-of-pocket for healthcare services before your insurance begins to pay.

  3. Copayment (Copay): A fixed amount you pay for a specific service or prescription at the time of the visit, separate from your deductible.

  4. Coinsurance: The percentage of costs you share with your insurance provider after meeting your deductible. For example, if your coinsurance is 20%, you pay 20% of the costs, and the insurance pays 80%.

  5. Out-of-Pocket Maximum: The maximum amount you’ll have to pay for covered services in a plan year. Once you reach this limit, your insurer pays 100% of covered expenses.

  6. Network: A group of healthcare providers and facilities that have contracted with your insurance company to deliver healthcare services at negotiated rates.

  7. In-Network vs. Out-of-Network: In-network providers are those who participate in your plan’s network, often resulting in lower costs. Out-of-network providers do not have an agreement with your insurer, leading to higher costs or reduced coverage.

  8. Essential Health Benefits: A set of healthcare service categories that must be covered by health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act, including emergency services, maternity care, and mental health services.

  9. Pre-existing Condition: A health issue that existed before enrolling in a new health insurance plan; coverage for these conditions is now protected under the Affordable Care Act.

  10. Health Savings Account (HSA): A tax-advantaged savings account that allows you to set aside money for qualified medical expenses, often paired with high-deductible health plans.

  11. Flexible Spending Account (FSA): A tax-advantaged savings account that allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars from their salary to pay for eligible medical expenses, including out-of-pocket healthcare costs not covered by insurance.
